A review of Queenie

Queenie gave me a fresh perspective. I didn't love this book but I learned from it. It was warm and challenging at the same time. There are many situations that Queenie finds herself in that I will never fully understand but this book gave me the opportunity to imagine.⠀ ⠀

The book is about Queenie going through heartbreak, flings, dating, anxiety, and racism through the eyes of a modern-day Jamaican Brit. Queenie has white people touching her hair without her consent, her white woman boss tone-policing her, and a Jamaican British family who don't believe in seeking help for mental health. Queenies’ story helped me understand the harmful stereotypes that exist around black women's bodies.⠀ ⠀

Candice Carty-Williams has been vocal about how she struggled to see herself represented in books, and I can't imagine how hard she had to fight to get Queenie into the world given the overwhelmingly white and male-dominated publishing industry. Thank you, Candice! ⠀ ⠀

Have you read it? Did you love it? What did you learn from Queenie? ⠀
